Gearing up for Thanksgiving

So, the Bates are gearing up for Thanksgiving as is anyone else. My parents and my brother and his family are coming up to our neck of the woods to celebrate this weekend. We are doing Thanksgiving dinner with them.

B's family always has Thanksgiving lunch, and like any Bates event, it's a packed house. I know for sure there will most likely be 30+ there. That's just the ones I know will be there. If other come, we could hit the 40+ range. While from a numbers standpoint that just seems crazy, it's actually kind of nice to get to visit with everyone. It seems as the kids have gotten older, we don't get to see as much of the extended family as we like. It also reminds me a lot of the Thanksgivings and Christmases we used to have when I was a kid. I can remember some of my dad's brothers and sisters coming in to our house and we would have people sleeping in the attic, on a mattress in the kitchen floor, on couches, on floors, etc. Both of my parents come from large families, so I guess I'm kind of acclimated to the craziness.

Anyway, I hope you and yours have a happy and safe holiday. Just remember to stay out of my & B's way when we hit the roads on Friday for those early bird sales because that Star Wars toy belongs to one of our boys. :)

Pleasant surprises

I received an email yesterday from M's kindergarten teacher. She had asked for M to come over and read to her kindergarten class. We agreed, but we put a caveat on it that it would be up for his 1st grade teacher to decide when he was ready. (We've had a few issues with M not completely his work as he should as such and we wanted to make it an incentive.) Mrs. S reported that M did a wonderful job. My mommy heart was just so full of pride! Well, wouldn't yours have been too?

G's 1 yo checkup

Memaw took G into the doctor for me on Monday as I was still working on October numbers for work and really couldn't afford to take off, but I couldn't afford to not get G in either because it's time for flu shots. She is now 22.4 lbs. and 30.25 inches. She is passing her milestones with flying colors and is now stringing two word sentences together. She can say "Stop That," or "Get Up," among other things. She also said M for the first time Monday night. She's been walking for about 3 weeks now so she is really getting into everything. She's starting to cut her molars now, so we are going to work on weaning her off the bottle over the Christmas holiday since I will be home for five days straight. Wish us luck!

Watch out for foreign objects!

It's been a while since I have had a chance to write on the antics on one of the kids. Honestly, with my rupturing my eardrum and falling down a flight of stairs and breaking my arm, it's kind of been my year this year....until yesterday.

I'm sitting at my desk working on my October numbers (Yes, still!), when I notice a B'ville number pop up on my cell phone that looks vaguely like the number for M's school, so I answer my phone.

"Mrs. Bates? This is the nurse at M's school."
"Yes?"
"Either you or your husband is going to need to come pick M up from school. M has rocks in his ear."

That's all I heard. I didn't hear anything else after that because at that moment all I was seeing is red.

"Ok, let me see if I can reach his dad," and I hang up.

I forgot B was at a funeral yesterday afternoon. I call his cell-no answer. I call the office-no answer. I call his cell again-no answer. I call the main office number and ask if there is any notes on where he might be-at a funeral. Of course, I knew that!

I look at the clock. It's 3:30ish. I think to myself, "I'll give him 15 minutes. The funeral might not be over yet." After 15 minutes are up, I go ahead and leave work, call the school to let them know I have been unsuccessful in getting in touch with B and I am on my way. I'm on my way to the vehicle when B calls.

"What's going on?" I relay the story to him and he asks me to call the school and let them know he'll be there as soon as possible. He's bringing him into Tulsa to take him to the minor emergency.

I call Memaw and relay the story to her and she agrees to watch G & W while we take Genius into the ER. So B & I take M into the minor emergency because from what I could see while we were at Memaw's house, he did indeed have rocks in his ear. The nurse practitioner confirmed it.

The took him back into an exam room, put drops in his ear, made him lie still for 5 minutes and then one syringe or water later, the rocks were out. The boy felt absolutely no pain. He even had a little bit of fun. We made him do his homework while we were waiting and his math homework involved a domino game. I also thumb wrestled with him while he was having to lie still for the medicine to settle in his ear.

The boy walked out with 4 Star Wars stickers and the syringe they used to irrigate his ear. They asked if we wanted to take the rocks home as a souvenir; we declined. When we were walking out, M was just hopping along thinking that what had just occurred was no big issue. We informed him otherwise and the consequences are still up for consideration.

Boys!!!

G's birthday pictures

So here they are...G's birthday pictures. She had a great time opening all her gifts....although she's really not getting to play with many of them as W is taking them all over. She didn't et into her cake until Uncle Bubba shoved her hand into the cake and then it was ok. The puppy in the pictures is my nephews' new puppy and W was fascinated with it. The older gentlemen in the pictures is my paternal uncle. Unc is kind of like my godfather; I love him to pieces. Enjoy!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY G!

Happy 1st birthday to my baby girl, G!

From October

It's hard to believe that almost two years ago (on my birthday) I had this funny feeling that I needed to take a pregnancy test. One positive (and a few confirmations) and 1 year 9 months later, here she is...one year old! How crazy is that!

Our Halloween fiasco

Here it is as promised!

M played youth football, and the high school has a "youth football" night for the younger kids. The date was originally slated for 10/16 I believe (which was during fall break). The younger kids get to run through the tunnel or some other thing with the varsity football players. They then have each squad on the field and they announce them. That is a pretty big thing to a bunch of little boys.

So, someone in their infinite wisdom moved the next home game-which fell on Halloween. Now, most little kids are more worried about going trick or treating on Halloween. The National Honor Society (I think) decided to do a trunk or treat for the kids coming to the game. B asked if any of the players from the team wanted to attend; we got no responses, so we were going to proceed with our normal plans. Later in the week, we did get an email from a couple of kids that wanted to do the game. B, being the head coach, said that if even one boy wanted to go, we were going.

So Halloween came and some of the boys wanted to go; we made our first stop at Grandpa & Step Grandma's. We left there and went straight to the high school to meet up with the boys. We stood there from 6:30 until around 7:10 (the picture of G in her stroller was while we were waiting). There wasn't a trunk or treat event at all really. There was a school bus way away from the entrance where we think they were handing out candy. We stood around and waited and when the time got close, I paid my $6! to get in, and I went into the stands and waited with G & W, who were getting very antsy by now. B and M came up with a bag of candy and said they weren't going to do it because not enough kids showed up. I felt so sorry for those little boys. They were so excited to get to go onto the field with the big guys. So we finally got out of there around 7:45-8 because we ran into some people we knew.

We left the field and made a stop a Meme and Papa's so they could see the kids; by the time we got done there it was almost 8:30 and it was really too late to go trick or treating. I took the kids to Mickey D's to make up for it, but sheesh! I felt so bad for M. Talk about basically ruining your whole night.

I emailed the president of the school board, the AD, and the teacher sponsoring the trunk or treat. I got a nice sympathetic email from the school board president and the teacher...the teacher's email came with a "Would you like to help next year?" D'OH! I never heard back from the AD....

So we didn't get to trick or treat this year...BUMMER! I've been making up for the lack of chocolate at home with the candy dish here at work which I've been hitting badly because of the stress...

And now I can breathe...quickly

You know, when I decided what path I wanted to pursue when I went into college, I knew I was going into business. I didn't really want to do the whole accounting thing as my mother was an accounting clerk and I knew the whole Hippocratic oath for accountants in regard to closing the books e.g. "You come in and work late; you do whatever it takes, unless you are dead. Then you had darn well better find a replacement first." Life got in the way, and I was in a hurry to graduate. I weighed my options when I transferred schools.

1. What degree could I pursue that would almost always mean I could find a job and that didn't require me to work with anything bloody (since I faint when giving blood)?
2. What degree could I choose that would get me out the quickest?
3. What degree could I chose that wouldn't lose me a whole lot of credits?
4. What degree could I chose that accentuated my strengths?

I ended up pursuing the degree that I set out not to pursue...accounting.

I'm still down a co-worker and I am still splitting all my movements from various facilities several different ways and I'm splitting them even more this month than I did last month. For those that aren't connecting the dots, more moves = more work. So quadruple the moves and double the desk, and I'm one busy chickadee right now. There was NO way I was going to get all the moves into the system and be able to meet the closing deadline, so I closed with estimates. So, while I am finally closed, I am not done. I can breathe a small sigh of relief and then delve into reversing the estimates and working through the numbers and booking them into the system one pipeline at a time. I refuse to touch those until Monday though. I'm worn out. You should see my eyes right now. They are bloodshot. I am actually wearing makeup today (a rare thing for me) because the bags under my eyes are horrific.

I'm getting ready to go through the Halloween pictures and get those uploaded. The kids were SO cute...especially Miss G. I'll have to update you on the whole Halloween debacle though. It was not fun and rather disappointing. So there's your hook...tune in next time for...why the kids didn't really get a Halloween.
