Do you remember when you were a child and you played your parents? Here is an example of what I mean. Let’s say, you wanted to spend the night at your friend’s house. Your parents were in separate rooms, and they are totally engrossed in what they were doing so they weren’t communicating with each other. You told Mom that Dad said it was ok, and you repeat the same to your dad. The first time, or maybe even the first couple of times, this works like a charm. You know you’ve done it. You played one parent against the other to get what you wanted.
I guess this is the age it starts—at least that is what my mother said. She said that Bubba and I both started this fibbing at this age. I also researched on BabyCenter, and it appears fibbing at this age is quite common. So, where is this leading?
Last night, M was so tired. He got up on the bed to eat yogurt with B, and then he tried to get into bed with B & I. He informed me “Daddy said I could.” He then turned to B and said, “Mommy said I could.” Yes, it has already started, only M hasn’t quite grasped that you do it when the other parent isn’t right in the room. I’m sure this has been going on for a while, but last night is the first night I realized it. We finally compromised, allowing him to watch TV with us until bedtime, but we all fell asleep. I guess he got what he wanted, huh?
